The Gurnee Garden Center opened its doors in 1973. A young entrepreneur, Jerry Laux and his wife, Shirley, began small and leased land selling plants in the spring, fruits and vegetables in the summer and Pumpkins and apples in the fall. After 4 years they purchased land and began building the new Gurnee Garden Center, concentrating on spring and summer plants and fall crafts. Through the help of family members, the garden center grew, the varieties of plants grew, and of course, the staff grew, but still keeping with the same family atmosphere. A few years ago, the Gurnee Garden Center was totally remodeled and offers a large, bright, airy atmosphere in which to browse and shop.
